Power Lens Bangladesh

Editorial Independence

Who decides what Power Lens publishes, and how we protect that decision from pressure.

Independence is not a slogan. It is a set of rules about who decides what we publish.

Our commitment

Power Lens does not act for any party, government, business, donor or candidate. We apply the same standards to everyone who exercises public power.

Who decides

The editorial team decides what we investigate, what we find and what we publish. The board oversees strategy, finances, safeguarding and legal compliance. It does not decide what individual investigations find or publish. Funders, partners and subjects have no say.

Separating money from editorial work

  • Fundraising and editorial decisions are kept separate.
  • We do not accept commissions from donors, parties, governments or private parties to investigate a named person or organisation.
  • We do not accept money on conditions that affect our findings. See our donor policy.
  • Our funders are listed on our funding transparency page.

Before publication

Subjects of a story receive a fair chance to respond (right of reply). They and our funders do not see or approve the story before it is published.

Political neutrality

We use the same methods for the government and the opposition. We do not endorse parties or candidates. We check our own coverage for balance, including who we have investigated and who we have not. Anyone with a party role declares it and does not work on matters involving that party. See our conflict of interest policy.

Pressure and interference

Pressure can come from politicians, officials, companies, donors, legal threats, online campaigns or from within. If anyone tries to influence what we publish, the person who received the approach reports it to an editor, and we record it. We do not change our findings because of pressure. Where it is safe and useful, we publish the fact that we were pressured.

Independent review

[TO ADD: how you will review your independence, for example "The board reviews a report each year on funding, complaints and coverage balance"]
